CGE Members and Community,

A Message to Grads using Public or Federal Datasets in their Research

Much of our research as graduate workers at OSU relies on resources provided by the federal government, a reality that is highlighted now more than ever given the current ongoing federal administrative changes. On top of that, information availability is always shifting on the internet, so if you use publicly available datasets or datasets made available, managed, or hosted through federal agencies (i.e. NOAA, CDC, USFWS, USGS, USDA, NIH, etc.), we highly recommend that you download and back up the datasets that you rely heavily on for your research. If your data requires formal requests from outside agencies, start those requests as early in your process as possible. These strategies follow best research practices and can help secure the longevity of your datasets independently from any structural changes to hosting agencies. For some more information on data storage and backup, you can reference OSU’s Research Data Services pages here:

COMMITEES AND CAUCUSES:

Mental Health Caucus Revival

If you're interested in joining/reviving the mental health caucus, please fill out this form so we can set up meeting times, get a listserv going, and plan what we want to do. We can create a community for grads, organize campaigns around specific issues, work with community groups, plan direct actions, or anything else that would help support the mental health of grads. Let our Co-VP for Membership, Vic, know if you have any questions by emailing them at vp_membership@cge6069.org! Caucuses (with a few exceptions) are open to members and associate members only, so let any other member you think may be interested know!

Constitution and Bylaws Committee Meeting Monday, March 3, 4-7pm!

The constitution and bylaws committee will be having their first of two meetings on Monday, March 3 from 4-7pm. This committee will be creating amendments to the CGE constitution, which will then be voted on by membership at the spring GMM. Anyone is welcome to join the committee. We will meet once in March to get trained on our constitution, how to make an amendment, and get started creating them. We'll then meet again in April to finalize our amendments and send them off to get voted on. If you're interested please fill out this form to get a reminder email! More info on the location and zoom link for the meeting will be in a future newsletter.

Contract Action Team (CAT) Meetings every Wednesday, 4-5pm in the WestM Student Lounge!

We need more CATs! Our CATs do all of our on-the-ground work, including turnout to events, talking to members, planning actions, and so much more. You can commit as much or as little time as you have.  If, since the strike, you have wanted to continue to be involved in organizing efforts, but don’t know where to start, come to a CAT meeting in the Westminster House Student Lounge (101 NW 23rd St)!

CGE’s Annual Brew-Off is coming up!

In early June, CGE and GTFF (UofO’s graduate worker union) will be hosting our annual Brew-Off! If you are a home brewer (of beer, cider, wine, mead, kombucha, or anything brew-able), it’s time to get brewing! Compete with us against GTFF and show off your brews to CGE membership and community. If you have any questions about the event, contact Rachael, our VP for Social Activities, at activities@cge6069.org.

Solidarity forever,

Erika, VP for Communications
